Project C03

Architectural applications and planning methods for fungal composites

Sub-project C03 is led by Prof. Sven Pfeiffer (Digital Design, Planning and Building, UAS_BO). Methods for architectural applications are developed which use the data on material properties. Innovative digital design and fabrication processes are examined, including finite element methods for design as well as additive manufacturing and robotic machining for fabrication through which precise manipulation of growth conditions of F. fomentarius shall be possible.

Both monolithic and multi-layer components are considered, including combinations with additional materials (wood, concrete, polylactide). Furthermore, the integration of material data into Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows is explored. The research aims to establish principles for a material-driven architecture with fungal composites.

Architectural demonstrators are designed and built for empirical research on user experience and to present the MY-CO BUILD CRC to the larger public together with the Science Communication Project. The sub-project is carried out in close collaboration with B01, C01, and C02, provides 3D-printing data to A04, and BIM and LCA data to A01 – A09.
