Sub-project C02 is run by Prof. Dietmar Stephan (Building Materials and Construction Chemistry, TUB). It aims to combine material properties of fungal composites with classic building materials such as concrete, glass, metal, wood, bricks, and aggregates to generate novel hybrid materials. Various substrates are thus combined with classic building materials, and hybrid materials are produced with F. fomentarius.
In addition to the mechanical behaviour of composites, the mutual influence of the materials at the interface, e.g., through fungal metabolites, also plays a role in durability. Targeted adaptation of the systems to each other pursues the vision of enabling their joint use in more sustainable components and efficient manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing. Physical-mechanical characteristics, ageing behaviour, and ecological aspects are investigated.
The sub-project is carried out in close collaboration with B01, B03, C01, and C02, and provides performance data of hybrid composites to A01 – A06 and data on resource use to A09 for sustainability analyses.
