Experimentally supported derivation and initial application of predictive models for substrate comminution

Sub-project A06 is run by Prof. Harald Kruggel-Emden (Mechanical Process Engineering, TUB). The sub-project investigates the mechanical comminution of hemp shives, spruce chips, and beech chips, i.e., the material and process-related influencing variables and the energies required for comminution, which are necessary for targeted substrate pretreatment.

Based on this, a numerical model based on the discrete element method is created, in which each individual substrate particle and its comminution can be modelled inherently independently of the comminution process used. The comminution is modelled using sub-approaches with different resolutions, creating a runtime efficient digital twin of the comminution process. This forms the basis for understanding the process in terms of energy consumption and properties for substrate comminution, but also provides the link to the substrate packings in which F. fomentarius is cultivated.

The sub-project is carried out in close collaboration with A05 and A07, delivers data on substrate comminution to A04, B01 – B03, C01, and C02, and obtains input on fungal growth from A01 – A03.
